Nembutal (Pentobarbital)

What is Nembutal?

Pentobarbital (Nembutal) belongs to the class of drugs known as the barbiturates.

Barbiturates are central nervous system depressant drugs that are referred to as sedative-hypnotic drugs. Due to the low dose, they produce sedative effects and at higher doses, they can treat issues with anxiety and depression.

The Nembutal is nonselective CNS depressants which are initially used as hypnotics and also anticonvulsants drugs. The sodium salts of amobarbital, phenobarbital, pentobarbital, and secobarbital are available as sterile parenteral solutions.

Barbiturates are substituted pyrimidine derivatives in which the barbituric acid is a basic structure common to these drugs. barbituric acid a substance that has no central nervous system and effect. CNS effect is gained by substituting alkyl, alkenyl, or aryl groups on the pyrimidine ring.

Pentobarbital Sodium Solution (Nembutal sodium injection) is a sterile solution for intramuscular or intravenous injection. Each mL of injection contains pentobarbital sodium 50 mg, in of propylene glycol, 40%, alcohol, 10%, and water for the sterile solution, to volume. The pH is maintained to about 9.5 with sodium hydroxide or hydrochloric acid.

Pentobarbital (Nembutal) Sodium is a short-effecting drug, structurally labeled as sodium 5-ethyl-5-(1-methyl butyl) barbiturate. The structural formula for Nembutal sodium is:

The sodium salt present as a white, mildly bitter powder which is freely soluble in alcohol and water but practically insoluble in ether and benzene.

Medical uses:

  1. It uses as sedatives.
  2. It uses as Hypnotics, for the short active treatment of insomnia
  3. It is also used as a pre-anesthetic.
  4. Anticonvulsant in anesthetic doses, it is also used in the emergency control of convulsions
  5. Cholera, meningitis, eclampsia, and toxic reactions to strychnine or local anesthetics.
  6. It creates a Euthanasia effect

The drug has also been used to decrease pressure within the skull in the condition of traumatic brain injury and as a euthanasia drug for both animals and humans, containing used in state executions of criminals. Any drug that can be used to euthanize people or animals is potentially risky in high doses.

Nembutal can cause death when used in high doses. It is used for euthanasia for animals as well as humans. It is also used only single or in combination with other drugs agents such as phenytoin.

Nembutal Abuse

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administrations (SAMHSA) assessments for 2015, only about 452,000 persons over the age of twelve in the United States of America used barbiturate drugs, and a probable 46,000 of these persons may have misused a barbiturate for their Nembutal addiction.

Effects of Nembutal Abuse

  • Similar effects that happen with intoxication to alcohol, such as slurred and slow speech; problems with CNS coordination; problems with balance; decreases in respiratory rate, decrease in heart rate, problems in blood pressure, and body temperature; the slowed rate of thought; problems with reasoning; aggression; lethargy; sedation and unconsciousness and coma
  • The growth of physical dependence (having both tolerance and withdrawal)

Long-term effects can include important issues with a person’s respiratory system as a result of chronic respiratory suppression and cardiovascular system, and liver.

Damage or trauma to the brain that can result in cognitive problems, such as issues with memory, attention, and reasoning, or the development
